Drs. Conrad and Meek further dissect this subject area by taking the audience through the diagnosis process and current favorable treatments in managing this complication of HHT. Key points from webinar:

• Pulmonary AVMs remove the normal filters in the lungs, allowing bubbles, carbon dioxide, bacteria, and small blood clots to pass through
• Blood clots can cause: TIA/Stroke, brain abscess, bone infection, and heart attack
• Screen for pulmonary AVMs in asymptomatic children with HHT
• Treatment of pulmonary AVMs should be considered if ≥ 3mm (children) or ≥ 2-3mm (adults)
• Modern coils do not pose problems for MRI scans
• Long-term advice to patients with documented pulmonary AVMs (treated or untreated) or patients that have not had their lungs screened: prophylactic antibiotics is necessary for procedures with the risk of bacteria (i.e., dental cleaning, colonoscopy, etc.)
