UMH Certified as HHT Center of Excellence

UHealth – University of Miami Health System has been officially certified as an HHT Center of Excellence. This marks another significant step forward in our fight to increase access to specialized care for our community!

By earning this designation, UHealth, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, joins our growing network of more than 30 Centers of Excellence across North America. Each center completes a rigorous and months-long certification process to ensure these institutions are able to provide expert care and management of this complex disease.

Under the leadership of Dr. Zikria, specialties at UHealth’s center include: Cardiology, dermatology, interventional radiology, otolaryngology/ENT, genetic counseling, gastroenterology, hematology, neurosurgery and pulmonology.

“It is a great honor to be named a Center of Excellence by Cure HHT,” said founding Miami center director Dr. Joseph Zikria, Assistant Professor of Clinical Interventional Radiology. “During my time as a fellow at Yale University School of Medicine, I saw firsthand the true impact expert and multidisciplinary HHT care can have on patients and their families. Our team looks forward to providing care for patients in our community and beyond.”

Miami is currently accepting new patients and welcomes inquiries from patients across South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America. The team includes many Spanish-speaking experts! To learn more about the new center, please visit UMiamiHealth.org/HHT.

Patient Benefits of Screening at an HHT Center of Excellence (COE)
At an HHT COE, specialists work with HHT on a daily basis and they know the signs and symptoms. They evaluate a patient’s whole body, not just a specific organ, and they can refer to other HHT COEs for advice. Other important benefits include:
  • Genetics / Family History: The Center will help trace HHT through generations to identify other “at risk” family members
  • Guidance / Experienced Medical Resource: Once patients have been to an HHT Center of Excellence, local physicians may contact physician(s) at the center for treatment recommendations, second opinions, or clarification of management options
