People with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) often face a long and stressful diagnostic process: three separate imaging tests to screen for AVMs in the brain, lungs, and liver.

The AVIATOR Study, led by the UCSF HHT Center of Excellence and running at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco, is testing a single fast MRI scan that screens all three organs in one visit, with no radiation and no invasive procedures. It uses an iron-based contrast called ferumoxytol.

If it works, one scan could replace the standard approach of separate MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds.
